The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carson City, is pleased to announce Brittany Witter- K-12 Curriculum & Assessment Coordinator - Humanities as the winner of a $5,000 Grant. The fund aims to increase literacy exposure and foster a love of reading in students through historical fiction and non-fiction novel sets for grades 3-8 while supporting teachers with strategies to enhance the impact of the novels and literacy development. 

More than a dozen applications from educators were received for this competitive grant.

The purpose of the grant is to provide funding for a school, department or teacher(s) to implement an innovative, classroom-based project that meets the following criteria. 

  1. Aligned to specific Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) and
  2. Aligned to specific strategies within Empower Carson City, 2022, the district’s strategic plan

In this case, Mrs. Witter will work with the classes to implement literacy circles, Socratic seminars, discussions, debates and other best practices related to the science of reading. Witter will begin grant implementation immediately, and a team representing the effort will present the highlights of the project at a Carson City Rotary Club meeting in June of 2024.

The Rotary Club of Carson City awards the annual grant as part of its commitment to supporting and recognizing educational achievement. The club also funds college scholarships and other educational opportunities for local young people.
