Carson High Athletics is pleased to announce the hiring of Samantha (Sam) Golden as the new head varsity girls basketball coach and Kyle Walt as the new head varsity boys golf coach at Carson High School.

Coach Golden has been the assistant coach for boys varsity basketball for the past two years as well as Carson High’s Athletic and Facilities administrative assistant since 2021. In 2023, she co-founded Rise 8, a non-profit basketball academy honoring her late father with a mission to instill resilience in children through basketball. She has been involved with coaching in various capacities since 2020.

Golden earned a bachelor’s in Dietetics from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. She was elected president of Student Dietetics Association while attending BYU where her college team placed first in a national university competition aimed to raise awareness surrounding nutrition and healthy habits. She attended Carson Middle School before she played varsity basketball for Spanish Springs High School as a freshman and was named team captain as a sophomore. Sam was also recognized for academic state twice. She played alongside Gabby Williams (UConn) and Jo Condie (Navy) on a Reno basketball club, which placed third in the Amateur Athletic Union Nationals in 2012.

Coach Walt has worked for the Carson City School District for the last 29 years. He was a Physical Education teacher at Carson Middle School from 1995-2009 and a prison program teacher from 2009 to present. He has previously been an assistant football coach at Carson High, a wrestling coach at Carson Middle and most recently the head varsity girls soccer coach at Carson High.

Walt earned a bachelor’s in Secondary Education with a major in Health and Physical Education and a minor in Reading K-12 from the University of Montana, Western in Dillon, Mont. He also played football at University of Montana, Western while maintaining an athletic scholarship from 1989-1993.
