The Carson City School District is pleased to honor school psychologists during National School Psychology Week, Nov. 7-11, 2022. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) designates the annual observance to help focus public attention on the unique contributions of school psychologists and other educators within U.S. school systems and how they create the connections necessary for students to develop critical academic and social emotional skills.

School psychologists partner with families, teachers, school administrators and other professionals to create safe, healthy and supportive learning environments that strengthen connections between home, school and the community. They apply expertise in mental health, learning and behavior to help children and youth succeed academically, socially, behaviorally and emotionally.

This year's theme, "Together We Shine," honors the hope felt after several challenging years and emphasizes the power of collective efforts to overcome difficulties to ensure that all students can thrive in school, at home and in life. The theme also highlights how school psychologists, teachers and other school personnel work with students and families to reestablish a sense of being valued parts of a greater whole.

“While we all have our own individual strengths and attributes, we shine even brighter when we all bring our ideas and actions together to uplift the community,” said NASP President Celeste Malone. “Through collaboration, we can empower students and adults to find purpose and possibility, all while fostering resilience. This is especially important for those who are or who feel marginalized, unrecognized or at risk.”

The hope of the national observance is to connect with students and staff to highlight how each person's contribution to the collective can lead communities forward.

“Students and families may have faced many difficulties created by the pandemic, social injustice and inequity, economic stress and challenges to mental and physical health,” said Rudy De Leon, psychologist for the Carson City School District. “As students continue to develop individually with their own skills through collaboration and with the support of others, they are more capable to help others foster resilience and support those who need it.”

Carson City School District currently has eight school psychologists who serve among the district’s 10 schools.
