District Honors Educators and Employees of the Year
04/24/2019
Nicolas Jacques, music teacher at Carson Middle School, was honored last night as the Carson City School District’s Educator of the Year. Additionally, James “Jim” Pike, special needs school bus driver for transportation, was recognized as the Education Support Professional (ESP) Employee of the Year for the district. During the school board meeting and annual event, the Carson City School District also recognized Vicki Thomas, LPN, school nurse at Empire Elementary School, was honored as Health Professional of the Year, and Tasha Fuson, principal at Carson High School, was named Administrator of the Year.

Carson City School District’s McKinney-Vento Students in Transition ‘Step Into Spring’ program will provide 275 pairs of new shoes to pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students in transition. Students in Transition are those individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.

The students of Mark Twain Elementary School will host their fourth annual community-wide “My School Color Run” Saturday, April 27, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at Mills Park in Carson City. Check in begins at 8:30 a.m. for registered runners. The untimed two-mile walk, jog or run event is a Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) fundraiser for the school. It is designed for all ages and is for all fitness abilities.

Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit group based in Irvine, Calif. hosted a nationwide challenge “Speak Up” to all students, grades K-12, where they submitted viewpoints about key educational issues, particularly concerning digital learning and the use of technology to support future ready schools. Last Friday, April 12, the organization announced through their blog the first-round winners of the 2018-19 Speak Up Challenge. Among the three winners was 7th grader Anakin Guzzetta from Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) in Carson City is the first to be announced.

Bike Event Commemorates Star Wars Day

Set for Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Fritsch Elementary School, the Bicycle Fun & Safety Day will benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event will serve as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms.
