Science students from Mr. Michael Reynolds class at Carson High School (CHS) will have an elevating opportunity to go Up Up and Away…well, err…tethered, Tuesday morning, April 23. Karalyn Mumm, owner and commercial pilot of the balloon “Citrus in the Sky,” will provide tethered hot air balloon rides on the front lawn at the high school.

Project Tomorrow, a national education nonprofit group based in Irvine, Calif. hosted a nationwide challenge “Speak Up” to all students, grades K-12, where they submitted viewpoints about key educational issues, particularly concerning digital learning and the use of technology to support future ready schools. Last Friday, April 12, the organization announced through their blog the first-round winners of the 2018-19 Speak Up Challenge. Among the three winners was 7th grader Anakin Guzzetta from Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) in Carson City is the first to be announced.

Bike Event Commemorates Star Wars Day

Set for Saturday, May 4, from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, at Fritsch Elementary School, the Bicycle Fun & Safety Day will benefit the Carson City Schools Foundation. Hosted by the Carson City School District, the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT), Safe Routes to School, local bike clubs and shops, the inaugural event will serve as a proving ground to acquaint experienced and less experienced bike riders with their eco-friendly transport mechanisms.

Terry Kerns speaks to 600 Freshmen

Terry Kerns, substance abuse and law enforcement coordinator with the Nevada Office of the Attorney General, spoke at Carson High School this morning to more than 300 freshmen about the opioid crisis facing Nevada and the science of addiction. She also discussed the laws that are being passed in the state to help and protect against this deadly habit, how to bring awareness to the opioid crisis and hopefully prevent students getting caught up in the addiction cycle. She will offer the same presentation again tomorrow to the remaining 300 freshmen on the same topics.

Carson High Teachers and Staff Receive $10,000 to Pay It Forward

Carson High School teachers and support staff were surprised this morning at their regularly scheduled 7 a.m. faculty meeting in the library before classes began. A total of $10,000, parceled out in individual envelopes containing $50 bills, sat neatly organized on a table across the room. Every teacher, custodian, kitchen worker, counselor, para pro and faculty member was given $50 to “Pay It Forward.”
