The Carson High School Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) 3 and 4 (juniors and seniors) students had the opportunity to go on a field trip to UC Davis on Oct. 20, 2022.

AVID is a nonprofit college-readiness program designed to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in college. The program places special emphasis on growing writing, critical thinking, teamwork, organization and reading skills.

The field trip included a presentation about the exciting qualities the school had to offer incoming freshmen and transfer students, a walking tour around the campus and an opportunity to eat lunch at one of the many dining facilities on campus.

The presentation included important deadlines for admission, admission requirements (like a 3.4 GPA for out-of-state applicants) and advice for prospective applicants. The walking tour took 60-minutes and covered the campus’ Arboretum, various libraries, the Quad, the Student Union, STEM buildings, Residence Halls and many other campus features. The tour ended at the “Silo,” which had grab-and-go or build-your-own stations, counter-service restaurants and a variety of food trucks.

Although it was a long day for the students and chaperones, out and back to Davis in one day, it was a great trip that provided students with the chance to tour a school they could prospectively attend in the future. The CHS AVID program plans to continue to bring these types of opportunities to their students, including an upcoming trip to WNC for the AVID 1 and 2 (freshmen and sophomore) students later this Fall and a trip to UNR for the AVID 2 (sophomore) students in the Spring.
