The Carson City School District, on behalf of the Rotary Club of Carson City, is pleased to announce Eagle Valley Middle School (EVMS) Teacher Kimberly Tucker as the winner of a $4,000 Grant. The fund will assist with the school’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) program. Nearly a half dozen applications from educators were received for this competitive grant.

The purpose of the grant is to provide funding for a school, department or teacher(s) to implement an innovative, classroom-based project that meets the following criteria.

  1. Aligned to specific Nevada Academic Content Standards (NVACS) and
  2. Aligned to specific strategies within Empower Carson City, 2022, the district’s strategic plan

In this case, the grant will further expand curriculum to EVMS students that focuses on students obtaining college and career ready skills. More specifically, the new 6th Grade Robotics class offered earlier this year focuses on project-based learning and introduces students to coding and the practice of using the Engineering Design Process to identify a problem, imagine solutions, create a model, improve their design and share their solution with peers.

Nationwide, growth in STEM careers outpaces that of any other occupational category. Additionally, STEM careers offer higher beginning salaries and more career earning potential than most other fields. Today’s careers require STEM skills at all levels of employment from service industries to engineering.

EVMS will begin grant implementation immediately, and a team representing the effort will present the highlights of the project at a Carson City Rotary Club meeting in June of 2022.
