Kudos to the Principals and Vice Principals at both Empire Elementary and Fremont Elementary in Carson City. They respectively hosted a Dance-off Competition and Sliming Event because students at each of their schools exceeded or surpassed reading goals during National Reading Week last week.

Susan Squires, principal of Empire Elementary School, faced-off against Nathan Brigham, vice principal, in a jaw-dropping, foot-stomping dance competition that generated jeers and cheers from students. All of their students combined, read more than 3 million words as part of the Reading Week challenge.

At Fremont Elementary, Jennifer Ward-DeJoseph, Ph.D., principal, and Cheryl Richetta, vice principal, were slimed a handful of times by students from each grade level. The sticky and ooey-gooey concoction created of vanilla pudding and apple sauce with green food coloring was doused on each of them as a reward for students meeting their combined goal of reading more than 50,000 minutes.

Other grade schools within the district including Bordewich Bray Elementary, Fritsch Elementary, Mark Twain Elementary and Seeliger Elementary also participated in reading challenges last week. All schools hosted special dress-up days and other fun activities to encourage students to read.
