The Carson City School District (CCSD) is pleased to honor school counselors during National School Counseling Week, Feb. 1-5, 2021. Sponsored by the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), the week will help focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems and how students are different as a result of what school counselors do.

National School Counseling Week highlights the tremendous impact school counselors can have in helping students achieve school success and plan for a career. Click here to view a short YouTube video about what school counselors do.

Carson City School District currently has 13 school counselors working in the high schools and middle schools. These counselors help CCSD students to problem solve through difficult interpersonal situations as well as provide support in planning for future college or career opportunities. The counselors also play an important role in student scheduling, student class placements and classroom social/emotional learning (SEL) lessons. During COVID, counselors reached out to students who are not engaging in digital learning, and they have created digital platforms for students to find resources.

School counselors are actively engaged in helping students examine their abilities, strengths, interests and talents. Counselors work in a partnership with parents as they encounter the challenges of raising children in today’s world and help focus on positive ways to enhance students’ academic, postsecondary and SEL development. School counselors also work with teachers and other educators to provide an educational system where students can realize their potential and set healthy, realistic and optimistic aspirations for themselves. School counselors are certified, experienced educators with a master’s degree in school counseling. The combination of their training and experience makes them an integral part of the total educational program.

As part of its celebration for National School Counseling Week, Carson City School District Counselors will be sharing highlights about why they love being School Counselors with their school communities. Parents or community members with specific questions about school counseling programs or concern about their students, should contact the school counselors at their local schools.
