The Carson City School District is pleased to announce campus improvements at three schools including Pioneer High, Fremont Elementary and Mark Twain Elementary schools. The new construction will add 10,700-square-feet at Pioneer, 12,288-square-feet at Fremont and 13,358-square-feet at Mark Twain respectively. All construction either has been completed or is scheduled to be completed by mid-August 2019.

In total, 26 portable classrooms have been eliminated from the district with only four remaining. Of the four remaining portables, one serves as space for the School Based Health Center and McKinney-Vento at the Gleason / Professional Development Center, another serves as storage at Seeliger Elementary, one as a drivers’ lounge in Transportation Services and the final portable classroom resides at Bordewich Bray Elementary.

PIONEER HIGH SCHOOL

All construction at Pioneer High School (PHS) and Carson Online was completed in April 2019. The campus improvements involved increasing the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math (STEAM) and elective options for students within the school district. A new room was dedicated to (CTE) Career and Technological Education in the health sciences and medical assisting field, AVID and Project Lead the Way Introduction to Engineering Design. Additionally, an Innovation Center/Library, cafe, biology and chemistry classrooms, Panther Hall and gym were also part of the expansion. The new multipurpose gym at PHS will be used for volleyball, yoga, basketball and a future indoor climbing wall is planned.

Other recent improvements included renovations of the art and ceramics lab, JAG lab, Carson Online Computer Labs and core classrooms. The school added a single point entrance, updated fencing and additional cameras for security purposes.

“With all the improvements and alignment to the CCSD Strategic Plan for college and career readiness, we are excited to offer additional career path options in a small campus setting,” said Jason Zona, principal of Pioneer High School.

FREMONT AND MARK TWAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

The estimated completion for construction at the two elementary schools will be mid-August 2019. The expansion will provide space for enrollment growth and improve space for Kindergarten, General Education, Special Education (CLS) and Early Childhood Development. The work also included miscellaneous tenant improvements and removal of Portables. Fremont Elementary will also receive a new court yard area for an outdoor classroom and meeting area.
