ADVANCED MULTI-MEDIA (full year)
The first nine weeks is spent using Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Power Point, and a combination of
these to complete projects. Students
will learn
the skills to format and type reports, papers, letters
and will give Power Point presentations using the Smart Board. Additionally,
students are taught HTML
and design their own web page. They also maintain the CMS web page that is linked to the school
district web page.
Adobe Photoshop is taught in depth
with students using the digital camera
and scanner. Basic video is taught using Adobe Premiere and
Claymation. The CMS virtual tour is produced in this class along with the CMS yearbook and CMS monthly newsletter. Students taking this
class will have the opportunity to take the Computer Literacy challenge test and may qualify for advanced computer classes at Carson High
School. **Please Note Course Prerequisites!**
BAND/PERCUSSION (full year)
Band is open to students with a desire to begin or improve their performance abilities on a percussion or wind instrument. The class
concentrates
on improving musical techniques through practice.
CHOIR (full year)
These performance classes are open to all students interested in the study of music. These courses emphasize vocal techniques, sight singing,
and ear training, music theory, music history, and solo and part singing, and non verbal communication skills. This course is highly recommended
for students planning to be in high school choir or musical theater.
HANDBELLS (full year)
These combined instrumental choirs of 6th, 7th, and 8th grades perform standard three to five octave music on Malmark handbells and
chimes. Advanced students must have previous musical experience or the instructor's permission to enroll. High standards of academic
excellence and attendance are required.
TEACHER ASSISTANT (Full Year/Semester)
Students will work within the classroom at the direction of the teacher. Students may assist with cleaning, maintaining, and organizing equipment
and supplies and/or also choose to be a teacher assistant in the library or the office. **Please Note course Prerequisites!**
TEACHER ASSISTANT PE (Full year)
Student must possess a requisite knowledge of sports and a willingness to participate. Leadership qualities are essential and must be able to
communicate with and assist other students and teachers. These students will assist with setting up equipment and must be organized and able
to perform duties quickly. Good attendance is essential.
ART (Semester)
This course will provide an introduction to the elements of dimensional design. Students will become familiar with a variety fo media and
materials, as will as the aesthetics of art.
HEALTH (Semester)
This course will cover a variety of topics including but not limited to: Value systems, decision-making, Internet safety, drug/alcohol education,
and family life.
HOME & CAREERS (Semester)
This class will include units on sewing, meal planning, entrepreneurship, interior design, international foods, and manners. “Hands-on” activities
will incorporate decision making and problem solving.
JOURNALISM (Semester)
In journalism class, students will report, write, create, and manage the Carson Middle School newspaper by covering events and news of
Carson Middle School. Students will gain hands-on experience with digital photography, graphic design, layout design, and publication, coupled
with a mix of technical and creative writing. Students must have earned a “B” or better in 7th grade English or have the recommendation of a
7th grade English teacher.
LEADERSHIP (Full Year)
This class plans and administers all student activities at CMS. These include all dances, assemblies, student council meetings,
and various other activities. **PLEASE NOTE COURSE PREREQUISITES!**
PEER TUTOR-ACADEMIC (Full Year)
Students will work at the direction of a teacher in academic classes assisting peers with meeting grade level standards.

PEER TUTOR-ADAPTIVE PE (Full Year)
This class involves working with students who are developmentally disabled and require an individualized and developmental
physical education program at the direction of the teacher.
PEER TUTOR – CLS (Full Year)
This class involves working with students who are developmentally disabled and may include community-based education programs,
reading assignments and monthly meetings. Enrollment in this class requires permission of the instructor.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION (Full Year)
This course provides instruction in activities such as lifelong recreation (bowling) and popular sports (football, basketball, volleyball).
Coed activities are offered during the course as well as fitness and nutrition.
SPANISH (Full Year)
This course is geared for students who are highly motivated and who want the academic challenge of learning a foreign language. At the end of
this course the student can take a challenge test which could earn the student high school credit. This course is NOT for native speakers.
METAL SHOP (Semester)
This class introduces the safe, efficient use of materials, practical skills, and metal tools while planning and constructing individual projects.
MULTI – MEDIA (Semester)
Course focus is on Microsoft Office. Several projects are completed using Word, Excel and Power Point and a combination of these programs.

Board. In addition to Microsoft Office, students are taught the basics of HTML and create their own web page. They are introduced to Adobe
Photoshop and are taught how to use a digital camera and scanner to complete projects using Adobe. Students taking this class will have
the opportunity to take the Computer Literacy challenge test and may qualify for advanced computer classes at Carson High School.
TECHNOLOGY (Semester)
This course is designed to expand a student's technological skills and knowledge. Topics include Structures,
Flight Simulation, Construction, Video Production, Pamphlet Design and Production, and Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
